Story behind the song
This song is a tribute to Eric who died from Als on March 2,2002. ALS is a disease that takes away all bodily functions but leaves the person with an active brain and the ability to keep thinking. Eric was only able to have small movement in his knee which he used to operate his computer to be able to communicate with others. The last thing he typed in was "Soon I Will Be Free". I was made aware of this by the family and I wrote a poem from his perspective. Later I was playing the guitar and trying to see if there was a song that could be developed from the poem. Without changing a word or adding or subtracting words the poem fit with the music you now hear. Perhaps the song was meant to be because so often poetry does not readily translate into song lyrics.
The song is sung by an outstanding Vancouver singer by the name of Bill MacDonald. The music is played by a great Vancouver band, "The Bobcats"

Lyrics
Verse 1
Soon I will be free
But do not weep for me
Because this journey that Ive been on
Has come and gone
Ill soon be free to talk again
Free to walk again
To feel the morning sun
Upon my skin
And Ill be free to once again
Hear the sound of my own voice
To stop and smell a rose
And know I have that choice
That choice is mine alone to make
When I am free
Chorus
Free
Free as a newborns cry
Free
Free as the birds that fly
Free as a moving cloud
Free to shout out loud
That I am free
I am free
Verse 2
And when you think of me
And how it used to be
Just remember the love we shared
I really cared
And in my heart youll still be there
Youll be everywhere
Ill see your smiling face
Inside my dreams
And I know time will heal the pain
And you will laugh and smile again
And when youre all alone
And thoughts of me flow past your mind
Dont ever worry for my soul
For I am free
Chorus
Free
Free as a newborns cry
Free
Free as the birds that fly
Free as a moving cloud
Free to shout out loud
That I am free
I am free
I am free
