Story behind the song
The origins of Gaudete lie in a Bohemian song called 'Ezechielis porta' where the verses are thought to have been heard by Finnish clerical students living and studying in Prague. The verses can be found in the historically important work by the editor, Finno in 'Piae Cantione'. The refrain or chorus may well have different origins and could well have been adapted by Finno himself, based upon a German Lutheran song. The number itself was popularized in the 1970s by the folk-rock group, Steeleye Span and later on by The Medieval Babes.
Lyrics
Gaudete, gaudete! Ergo nostra contio psallat iam in lustro Benedicat Domino salus Regi nostro Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus Ex Maria virginae: Gaudete!
