Story behind the song
The derivation of the title comes from St Day, Sans Day or St They in the parish of Gwennap, Cornwall. The saint in question is thought to have been of Breton origin. The melody itself and the first three verses were transcribed after the arranger heard a Cornish villager singing the tune. A fourth stanza in Cornish called 'Ma gron war'n gelinen' was eventually translated and added to complete the song.
Lyrics
Now the holly bears a berry as white as the milk, And Mary bore Jesus all wrapped up in silk. And Mary bore Jesus, our Saviour to be, And the first tree in the greenwood was the holly Holly holly And the first tree in the greenwood was the holly Now the holly bears a berry as green as the grass And Mary bore Jesus who died on the cross. And Mary bore Jesus, our Saviour for to be, And the first tree in the greenwood was the holly Holly holly And the first tree in the greenwood was the holly Now the holly bears a berry as black as the coal, And Mary bore Jesus who died for us all. And Mary bore Jesus, our Saviour for to be, And the first tree in the greenwood was the holly Holly holly And the first tree in the greenwood was the holly Now the holly bears a berry as blood it is red, Then Mary bore Jesus who rose from the dead. And Mary bore Jesus, our Saviour for to be, And the first tree in the greenwood was the holly Holly holly And the first tree in the greenwood was the holly
