Story behind the song
The title track of the album and a tribute to the long forgotten writers and performers responsible for many of the popular carols that we take for granted today. It's easy to assume that songs described as 'traditional' have somehow appeared out of the ether with no attributable source, but somewhere down the line, somebody has put pen to paper or started an oral tradition that's passed from person to person and from village to village. Even a song like Silent Night didn't receive its proper accreditation for a couple of generations, with copyright and performing rights being a relatively recent protection for the writers involved.
Lyrics
Goodbye from the singers, farewell to the songs A shadow is cast by a history long The tunes are passed down from father to son Names long forgotten as the centuries run And they're gone, but their music lives on In the heart of December cathedral bells chime Down the long road to winter in the snow and the rime The melody lingers like finest of wines On the lips of the ages Down the years, with the turning of time So raise up a glass and toast to the troubadours Those singers of songs who've opened so many doors And carried the spirit from the first to the last Whose gift is the music A present from Christmas past
