Story behind the song
In Dulci Jubilo dates back to 15th century Leipzig and contains an amalgam of Latin and mediaeval German, also known as macaronic style. The slightly fanciful origin features a German mystic called Henrich Suso who was said to have been taught the song by angels. Upon learning the song, he then joined the angelic songwriters in a dance of worship. The English version, Good Christian Men, Rejoice! (which is also featured in the recording) was written by Robert Lucas de Pearsall in 1837. de Pearsall was a lawyer by profession, but his interests also lay in music and archaeology. Clearly a man of considerable all round talents. A lively instrumental version of the song was a Christmas hit for musician, Mike Oldfield, reaching number 4 in the UK charts in 1975.
Lyrics
In dulci jubilo Now sing with hearts aglow! Our delight and pleasure Lies In praesepio Like sunshine is our treasure Matris in gremio Alpha es et O! Alpha es et O! O Jesu parvule For thee I long alway Comfort in my heart’s blindness O puer optime With all thy loving kindness O princeps gloriae Trahe me post te Trahe me post te O patris caritas! O Nati lenitas! Deeply were we stained Per nostra crimina But Thou for us hast gained Coelorum gaudia O that we were there! Ubi sunt gaudia In any place but there? There are Angels singing Nova cantica And there the bells are ringing In Regis curia O that we were there! O that we were there! Good Christian men, rejoice With heart and soul, and voice Give ye heed to what we say Jesus Christ is born today Ox and ass before him bow And he is in the manger now Christ is born today! O Christ is born today! Good Christian men, rejoice With heart and soul, and voice Now ye hear of endless bliss Jesus Christ was born for this He hath Op'd the Heavenly door And man is blessed for evermore Christ was born for this! O Christ was born for this! Good Christian men, rejoice With heart and soul, and voice Now ye need not fear the grave Jesus Christ was born to save Calls you one and calls you all To gain his everlasting hall Christ was born to save! O Christ was born to save
