Story behind the song
When the organ in Saint Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, Austria stopped working, organist Franz Gruber had a serious problem on his hands. With the evening service wholly reliant on organ for accompaniment, he put his musical thinking cap on and came up with arguably the most successful Christmas carol of all time. To replace the organ, he arranged the newly written piece for two solo voices, chorus and guitar and enlisted the help of assistant pastor, Joseph Mohr to write an appropriate lyric. Sadly for Gruber and Mohr, the true authorship of the song became lost despite enormous success by the famous Strasser Sisters singing troupe. Eventually a government committee began researching into the true authorship of the carol and with the aid of Felix Gruber, Franz's son, the real history behind Stille Nacht came to light. It may have been 47 years too late, but at least this evergreen Christmas classic will forever be synonymous with the names of Gruber and Mohr. Since then, Silent Night or Stille Nacht has received hundreds of translations. An impressive outcome for a piece originally written out of sheer desperation!
Lyrics
Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright Round yon Virgin Mother and Child Holy Infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ, the Saviour is born Christ, the Saviour is born Silent night, holy night Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Alles schläft, einsam wacht Nur das traute hochheilige Paar. Holder Knab im lockigten Haar, Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh! Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh! Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Hirten erst kundgemacht durch der Engel Alleluja, Tönt es laut bei Ferne und Nah: Jesus der Retter is da! Jesus der Retter ist da!
